Serum protein markers are identified for the early detection of lung diseases and for the prevention of organ damage caused by inflammation or oxygen deficiency (e.g. heart attack, stroke).
Lung cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) - caused by smoking or environmental toxins - are diseases that are on the rise worldwide. As soon as they are diagnosed, patients' chances of recovery are already severely limited. Biomarkers (measurable serum indicators) help to recognise these diseases at a very early stage. With further clinical diagnostics, patients at risk can be given medical advice or treatment at an early stage.
Inflammation of any kind causes scars in the body. In the case of skin injuries, heart attacks, strokes or autoimmune diseases, the body activates its immune system, which sends defence cells into the area of inflammation, resulting in an enlargement of the damaged area. Better understanding and control of these immune processes should improve organ regeneration and protection.
